But when burly ex-football player-turned-investigator Milan Jacovich is hired to investigate the case, he gets stabbed, beaten, and almost burned to death, before he's led to the right door. Unfortunately there's a catch, and Milan is dangerously close to getting tangled in a barbed-wire net. Martin's Press.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Horatio Herbert Kitchener (1850-1916) was a British Field Marshal and colonial administrator famous for his military campaigns and who later played a central role in the early part of the World War I. Kitchener won fame in 1898 for winning the Battle of Omdurman and securing control of the Sudan, after which he was given the title “Lord Kitchener of Khartoum”. As Chief of Staff (1900–02) in the Second Boer War he played a key role in the conquest of the Boer Republics. His term as Commander-in-Chief (1902–09) of the army in India saw him quarrel with the Viceroy, Lord Curzon, who eventually resigned. Kitchener then returned to Egypt as its de facto administrator. In 1914, at the start of the World War I, Kitchener became Secretary of State for War. One of the few to foresee a long war, he organized the largest volunteer army in the world, and a significant expansion of materials production to fight Germany. He was idolized by the British public, appearing on recruiting posters demanding “Your country needs YOU!” that are still part of popular culture. Despite having warned of the difficulty of provisioning Britain for a long war, he was blamed for the shortage of high-explosive shells in the spring of 1915 and stripped of his control over munitions and strategy. Kitchener died in 1916 when the warship taking him to negotiations in Russia was sunk by a German mine. “Sir Philip Magnus gives us a ruthlessly objective account of [Kitchener’s] life... [His] narrative is a model of perception and clarity, and with it he blends a wealth of fascinating quoted source material, new and old. The combination is a biography to end all biographies of Lord Kitchener.” — Leon Wolff, The New York Times “A biographical masterpiece” — New Statesman “A great achievement... it will remain an indispensable work of reference... the author has conducted his historical research with industry and thoroughness... Kitchener's failings and failures have been recognised when setting out his virtues and achievements.” — Warren Perry, The Australian Quarterly “[Kitchener’s] inner flaws as well as the visible front are starkly apparent... for those who enjoy and profit from the study of personalities, motivations, and the crosscurrents which pull from all sides on men in high public office, this book will prove to be a valuable addition.” — Maj. Keith C. Nusbaum, Military Review

This book was released on 2020-07-23 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how the Medici Grand Dukes pursued ways to expand their political, commercial, and cultural networks beyond Europe, cultivating complex relations with the Ottoman Empire and other Islamicate regions, and looking further east to India, China, and Japan. The chapters in this volume discuss how casting a global, cross-cultural net was part and parcel of the Medicean political vision. Diplomatic gifts, items of commercial exchange, objects looted at war, maritime connections, and political plots were an inherent part of how the Medici projected their state on the global arena. The eleven chapters of this volume demonstrate that the mobility of objects, people, and knowledge that generated the global interactions analyzed here was not unidirectional—rather, it went both to and from Tuscany. In addition, by exploring evidence of objects produced in Tuscany for Asian markets, this book reveals hitherto neglected histories of how Western cultures projected themselves eastwards.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our genome is the blueprint for our existence: it encodes all the information we need to develop from a single cell into a hugely complicated functional organism. Yet it is more than a static information store: our genome is a dynamic, tightly-regulated collection of genes, which switch on and off in many combinations to give the variety of cells from which our bodies are formed. But how do we identify the genes that make up our genome? How do we determine their function? And how do different genes form the regulatory networks that direct the processes of life? Introduction to Genomics is the most up-to-date and complete textbook for students approaching the subject for the first time. Lesk's engaging writing style brings a narrative to a disparate field of study and offers a fascinating insight into what can be revealed from the study of genomes. The book covers: the similarities and differences between organisms; how different organisms evolved; how the genome is constructed and how it operates; and what our understanding of genomics means in terms of our future health and wellbeing. The Online Resource Center accompanying Introduction to Genomics features: For students *Extensive and imaginative weblems (web-based problems) for each chapter designed to give you practice with the tools required for further study and research in the field *Hints and answers to end-of-chapter problems and exercises support your self-directed learning *Guided tour of websites and major archival databanks in genomics offer a wealth of resources to springboard your own research *Journal club: links to related research articles on topics covered in the book are paired with engaging questions to improve your interpretation of the primary literature *Rotating figures allow you to visualize complex structures For instructors *Downloadable figures from the book.
