Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book length defence of a counterfactual theory of causation. The analysis defended is new. It expresses the idea that, independent of its competitors, a cause raises the chance of an effect over its mean background chance by a complete causal chain. The analysis depends upon a novel development of David Lewis's Theory of Counterfactuals. One consequence of the analysis is that causation is not transitive. Causation is also nonsymmetric. The counterfactual basis of causal nonsymmetry is the result of a number of different, and sometimes interacting, nonsymmetries. The analysis allows for the development of a novel theory of events whose nature is independent of their role in causation and the identification of one other important causal relationship: property causation. Although compatible with Hume's denial of necessary connections between distinct existences, a key feature of the theory is that it benefits from being independent of the Humean framework. There are two ways in which something may be metaphysically fundamental: vertically and horizontally. Many metaphysicians emphasise vertical fundamentality and focus on truth making. The book rejects this emphasis and the truth making approach in particular. Horizontally fundamental metaphysical entities are those that are necessary components in different possible universes. Causation has a claim to be horizontally fundamental: the cement of any universe. Laws are patterns of causation realised in different metaphysical frameworks such as those articulated by Lewis, Armstrong and the powers ontologists. The book recognises varieties of causation both in, for example, counting cases of double prevention and causation by genuine processes as types of causation, and allowing that the analysis identifies causes across these different metaphysical frameworks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume draws together contributions from a number of scholars with an interest in empirical, cross-linguistic description. Most of the papers were first presented at the symposium Information Structure in a Cross-linguistic Perspective held in Oslo in November/December 2000. The descriptions are functionally oriented, and their common focus is how information structure – in a broad sense – can be compared across languages. 'Information structure' has been approached in a variety of ways by the authors, so as to give a broad picture of this fundamental principle of text production, involving the way in which a speaker/writer chooses to present a message in terms of given/new information, focus, cohesion, and point of view. Central to much of the research is the problem of establishing criteria for isolating linguistic constraints on language use from cultural-linguistic conventions in text production. The linguistic comparison includes English, German and/or one of the Scandinavian languages, with sidelights to other languages. Most of the papers are text- or corpus-based, and the ongoing work on parallel corpora in Scandinavia is reflected in several contributions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The song continues as the country music duo of Marty Abby and Christopher Powell prepare for their upcoming tour. They make their four newly adopted daughters a part of the planning. Things change when their oldest daughter, born with serious birth defects, is pushed to the floor and called a freak by the school bully. The child is beyond consolation until the children's doctor tells the family of a new technique that will straighten the little girl's twisted bones and of new plastic surgery to remove her scars from a cleft palate. These surgeries create problems with the already heavily booked, out-of-state concerts. The duo's talented crew comes up with techniques to let Chris go on tour and Marty stay with their daughter during the surgeries but join him via live projection on screens set up at the different venues. This seems to be a solution until the couple start getting threatening letters. The police officer assigned to celebrity stalking begins work. Just before Chris is to leave for the first concert, he learns of a sting set up to capture the stalker. When he confronts the woman, she kicks him, injuring his shoulder. Marty, seeing this on TV, is very angry at his "macho move." They part after a verbal fight. For the next month, because of a great deal of misunderstanding, the couple believes their marriage is over. It isn't until the children help Marty realize that something is very wrong that she goes to him. She realizes he never knew that the woman he confronted was not the stalker. On the way home, the stalker attempts to kill them. True identities and motives of officers assigned to protect the couple""as well as who it is that actually stopped the stalker""are revealed at that time.

Book excerpt: In Douglas Lain's debut novel set during the turbulent year of 1968, Christopher Robin Milne, the inspiration for his father's fictional creation, struggles to emerge from a manufactured life, in a story of hope and transcendence. Billy Moon was Christopher Robin Milne, the son of A. A. Milne, the world-famous author of Winnie the Pooh and other beloved children's classics. Billy's life was no fairy-tale, though. Being the son of a famous author meant being ignored and even mistreated by famous parents; he had to make his own way in the world, define himself, and reconcile his self-image with the image of him known to millions of children. A veteran of World War II, a husband and father, he is jolted out of midlife ennui when a French college student revolutionary asks him to come to the chaos of Paris in revolt. Against a backdrop of the apocalyptic student protests and general strike that forced France to a standstill that spring, Milne's new French friend is a wild card, able to experience alternate realities of the past and present. Through him, Milne's life is illuminated and transformed, as are the world-altering events of that year. In a time when the Occupy movement eerily mirrors the political turbulence of 1968, this magic realist novel is an especially relevant and important book.
