Book excerpt: Raised in a desperately poor village during the height of China's Cultural Revolution, Li Cunxin's childhood revolved around the commune, his family and Chairman Mao's Little Red Book. Until, that is, Madame Mao's cultural delegates came in search of young peasants to study ballet at the academy in Beijing and he was thrust into a completely unfamiliar world. When a trip to Texas as part of a rare cultural exchange opened his eyes to life and love beyond China's borders, he defected to the United States in an extraordinary and dramatic tale of Cold War intrigue. Told in his own distinctive voice, this is Li's inspirational story of how he came to be Mao's last dancer, and one of the world's greatest ballet dancers.

Book excerpt: In a small, desperately poor village in northeast China, a peasant boy sits at his rickety old school desk, interested more in the birds outside than in Chairman Mao's Red Book and the grand words it contains. But that day, some strangers come to his school -- Madame Mao's cultural delegates. They are looking for young peasants to mold into faithful guards of Chairman Mao's great vision for China. The boy watches as one of his classmates is chosen and led away. His teacher hesitates. Will she or won't she? She very nearly doesn't. But at the last moment, she taps the official on the shoulder and points to the small boy. "What about that one?" she says. This is the true story of how that one moment in time, by the thinnest thread of chance, changed the course of a small boy's life in ways beyond description. One day he would dance with some of the greatest ballet companies of the world. One day he would be a friend to a president and first lady, movie stars, and some of the most influential people in America. One day he would himself become a star: Mao's last dancer and the darling of the West. Here is Li Cunxin's own story, one that very nearly vanished, like millions of other peasants' lives, amid revolution and chaos. It is a story of courage, of a mother's love, a boy's longing for freedom -- a beautiful, rich account of an inspirational life, told with extraordinary honesty, dignity, and pride. Book jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Now, what do I do?!” I dare say, there is not a single person who at least once in his or her life has not faced an unexpected situation, a newfound reality, a daunting challenge, or veiled opportunity and not wondered what to do. You may feel that you have made poor choices, that your opportunities have passed you by, or that you’re playing musical chairs, the music has stopped, and all the seats are taken. This book is for those individuals like you who have come to a fork in the road, chosen a path, and found themselves twenty to thirty (or more) years later in a destination they didn’t quite recognize. But the stories are relevant for anyone, at any age, at any station in life who has awakened and wondered what they are going to do next or how will they move forward. I want to offer hope, inspiration, and applicable lessons as derived from the lives of well known, and not-so-famous men and women who found new and unexpected success—by many definitions—late in life. My hope is that these remarkable transformational stories will light a spark—whether you are twenty-five or sixty-five—to take back the reins of your life and become clear on exactly what you are going to do now and how you wish to contribute to the world. The music has not stopped, and there is still time to find your seat.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook highlights the unique role that quality Arts processes and experiences can and should play across the curriculum to ensure that all learners’ creativities and imaginations flourish. It provides much-needed strategies, units of work and practical resources in six arts disciplines – visual arts, literature, drama, music, dance and media arts. It is a must-read for those keen to develop research-informed, integrated, arts-rich learning and teaching strategies while also exploring each discipline. Alongside the ‘four Cs’ (critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity) the authors propose four additional ‘Cs’: curiosity, compassion, connection and courage as much-needed 21st century capabilities. The book speaks to the current debates on STEAM vs. STEM education, and provides an important framework for preservice and experienced classroom teachers, including arts specialists.

The first of its kind, this book provides dance educators with tools to refocus teaching methods to celebrate the pluralism of the United States. The contributors discuss how to diversify ballet technique classes and dance history courses in higher education, choreographing dance about socially charged contemporary issues, and incorporating Native American dances into the curriculum, among other topics. The application of relevant pedagogy in the dance classroom enables instructors to teach methods that reflect students' culture and affirm their experiences.

Book excerpt: If you feel like barfing every time you read about him marrying him or think we should abolish busing now that many of our schools are war zones, but are afraid to say it in the liberal world we live in—don’t. Don’t say anything until you hear what Leften Wright has to say. He tells you what to say and not say, what to do and not do, and have a good time while doing or not doing it. A little humor is a deadly thing to liberals. Global warming is a religion. School vouchers are a greater threat than terrorism. They see racism everywhere. Fracking is Frankensteinian. Anything good for America is bad. Wright shares his strategies with you on how to make your way through that world, and have a great time while doing it. He suggests profiting like Al “Jazeera” Gore from the unwinnable fight against climate change and sneaking plastic bottles into your liberal neighbors’ paper-only bin in the dead of night. It would be prudent to slip this book into that jacket your child made at preschool. If you are reading it on a tablet, be prepared to press the “Bats Endangered” button if you sense someone peeking.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At some point in their career, nearly all the dancers who worked with George Balanchine were told “don’t act, dear; just dance.” The dancers understood this as a warning against melodramatic over-interpretation and an assurance that they had all the tools they needed to do justice to the steps—but its implication that to dance is already to act in a manner both complete and sufficient resonates beyond stage and studio. Drawing on fresh archival material, Don’t Act, Just Dance places dance at the center of the story of the relationship between Cold War art and politics. Catherine Gunther Kodat takes Balanchine’s catch phrase as an invitation to explore the politics of Cold War culture—in particular, to examine the assumptions underlying the role of “apolitical” modernism in U.S. cultural diplomacy. Through close, theoretically informed readings of selected important works—Marianne Moore’s “Combat Cultural,” dances by George Balanchine, Merce Cunningham, and Yuri Grigorovich, Stanley Kubrick’s Spartacus, and John Adams’s Nixon in China—Kodat questions several commonly-held beliefs about the purpose and meaning of modernist cultural productions during the Cold War. Rather than read the dance through a received understanding of Cold War culture, Don’t Act, Just Dance reads Cold War culture through the dance, and in doing so establishes a new understanding of the politics of modernism in the arts of the period.
