Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this erudite and gracefully written ethnography, Mariane Ferme explores the links between a violent historical and political legacy, and the production of secrecy in everyday material culture. The focus is on Mende-speaking southeastern Sierra Leone and the surrounding region. Since 1990, this area has been ravaged by a civil war that produced population displacements and regional instability. The Underneath of Things documents the rural impact of the progressive collapse of the Sierra Leonean state in the past several decades, and seeks to understand how an even earlier history is reinscribed in the present.

Book excerpt: There is nothing lonelier than a cat who has been loved, at least for a while, and then abandoned on the side of the road. A calico cat, about to have kittens, hears the lonely howl of a chained-up hound deep in the backwaters of the bayou. She dares to find him in the forest, and the hound dares to befriend this cat, this feline, this creature he is supposed to hate. They are an unlikely pair, about to become an unlikely family. Ranger urges the cat to hide underneath the porch, to raise her kittens there because Gar-Face, the man living inside the house, will surely use them as alligator bait should he find them. But they are safe in the Underneath...as long as they stay in the Underneath. Kittens, however, are notoriously curious creatures. And one kitten’s one moment of curiosity sets off a chain of events that is astonishing, remarkable, and enormous in its meaning. For everyone who loves Sounder, Shiloh, and The Yearling, for everyone who loves the haunting beauty of writers such as Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, Flannery O’Connor, and Carson McCullers, Kathi Appelt spins a harrowing yet keenly sweet tale about the power of love—and its opposite, hate—the fragility of happiness and the importance of making good on your promises.

Book excerpt: Frankie Callahan is a man walking the thin line between sanity and insanity. From the time his father died when he was a child and his mother had to move him and his brother Pete to the notorious south end of Boston, life had become little more than a seemingly endless series of disappointments and heartaches. At age twenty Pete was killed in a gang shooting; years later Frankie lost his mom to cancer; and then the final insult; finding out purely by accident that Naomi, his wife of ten years had not only been poisoning him for the money his mother left him but was also carrying on an adulterous affair with his stepfather as part of an insurance scam which was cut short by Frankie's moms untimely and unexpected passing from cancer. Frankie had become the new target. But after years of excusing her psychologically abusive behavior towards him due to his kind nature and the fact that he for some reason loved her deeply he reached his breaking point and decided that Naomi and his beloved stepfather would have to pay the ultimate price and die for their sins. After careful planning and research Frankie decides to transform himself into the most unlikely of killers in this game of kill me if you can' only to find himself hopelessly lost in the murky psychological abyss that exists in the desolate badlands between fantasy and reality he had ventured too far; INTO THE UNDERNEATH!

Book excerpt: Underneath the Green Canopy was inspired by an actual old farmhouse built in Lincoln County, North Carolina, sometime around the late 1700s or early 1800s. All of the events are centered around Denver, North Carolina. The house is still a beautiful and a magnificent looking home today. The book is all fictional with some actual events, times, places, and figures. Most importantly it is good clean entertainment reading with most of the wording in easy readable form. It will not challenge one's mind with a lot of unusual words. A mystery story at the beginning and will not be mentioned again until the mystery is solved at the end of the book. The White Oak Farm story will take you back five generations of the Stone family starting with the first Thomas McCoy Stone in the late 1700s that borrowed money to start his farm. He went on to be one of the early United States Senator that helped with the farming community throughout the country. It talks about farming, horse farming, slavery, Civil War, dairy farming, gold rush, oil discovery, new technology of the day, World War I, Depression era, and touches on World War II. Many love stories thought out the five generation of the Stone family.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is no secret that we all must learn to live with illnesses, events, or other difficulties at some point during our existence. But how do we move beyond living life underneath these challenges or obstacles? In a collection of personal essays, retired registered nurse Dianne Poppert shares human stories of those who have been able to find the worthwhile while living life underneath a diagnosis, troubles, or other woes, and ultimately realize balance on a rocking ship amid the storm. Divided into two sections, the first contains stories of hope as contributors share how they faced difficulties that required change in their plans and lives, even when those events were tough to understand. The second section contains reflections and wisdom from Poppert’s perspective as a professional caregiver who witnessed the small gifts that life sometimes offers, even when we are living underneath seemingly monumental challenges. Beyond Living Life Underneath shares snapshots of life recalled from human experiences and stories that detail how some have found the worthwhile during life’s greatest trials.

Book excerpt: Underneath, not on the surface. That’s where the truth of our existence lies, sometimes buried under years of punishment, suffocating, choking on the dirt we have carried with us so deep in our soul where no one will ever find it. Sometimes it scratches, clawing at the thin veneer of the respectable face we present to the world, hoping to pierce, to pop the bloated façade of all we refuse to acknowledge we have done. Underneath the skin lies the dirt we have on ourselves. We hide it from the investigations of others while knowing that if we were to slice the surface and let the dirt run free, we would be liberated from this human prison in which we are securely kept… Underneath.

Underneath It All: A Collection of Memoirs shows snapshots of her evolution: Flying out of a giant tree. A Long John Silver's out-of-body experience. Rehab with an ex-Marine. Honorable closure. Throughout, Hatcher shares her deep love of the places that formed and informed her, from a small town in Texas to the top of the San Juan Mountains in Colorado and the high deserts of Arizona. Spanning more than seven decades, Underneath It All takes us on an expedition to discover the truth of one remarkable woman's life.

This book was released on 2014-01-03 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The amount of data in medical databases doubles every 20 months, and physicians are at a loss to analyze them. Also, traditional methods of data analysis have difficulty to identify outliers and patterns in big data and data with multiple exposure / outcome variables and analysis-rules for surveys and questionnaires, currently common methods of data collection, are, essentially, missing. Obviously, it is time that medical and health professionals mastered their reluctance to use machine learning and the current 100 page cookbook should be helpful to that aim. It covers in a condensed form the subjects reviewed in the 750 page three volume textbook by the same authors, entitled “Machine Learning in Medicine I-III” (ed. by Springer, Heidelberg, Germany, 2013) and was written as a hand-hold presentation and must-read publication. It was written not only to investigators and students in the fields, but also to jaded clinicians new to the methods and lacking time to read the entire textbooks. General purposes and scientific questions of the methods are only briefly mentioned, but full attention is given to the technical details. The two authors, a statistician and current president of the International Association of Biostatistics and a clinician and past-president of the American College of Angiology, provide plenty of step-by-step analyses from their own research and data files for self-assessment are available at extras.springer.com. From their experience the authors demonstrate that machine learning performs sometimes better than traditional statistics does. Machine learning may have little options for adjusting confounding and interaction, but you can add propensity scores and interaction variables to almost any machine learning method.
