Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "You said that you would not fail to improve yourself according to my teaching and correction, and you would do everything in your power to behave according to my wishes." [Prologue] "I urge you to bewitch and bewitch again your future husband, and protect him from holes in the roof and smoky fires, and do not quarrel with him, but be sweet, pleasant and peaceful with him. Make certain that in winter he has a good fire without smoke and let him slumber, warmly wrapped, cozy between your breasts, and in this way bewitch him. In summer take care that there are no fleas in your bedroom or bed." "If just once you displease him you will have a difficult time ever appeasing him enough so that the stain of his anger does not remain engraved and written on his heart. Although he may not show it or mention it, your misdeed cannot soon be smoothed over and erased. Should a second act of disobedience occur, watch out for his vengeance... " "Gardeners say that rosemary seeds do not ever grow in French soil, but if you pluck little branches from a rosemary plant, strip them from the top downwards, take them by the ends and plant them, they will grow. If you want to send them far away, you must wrap the branches in waxed cloth, sew them up and then smear the outside with honey; then powder with wheat flour and you may send them wherever you wish." "But as soon as you arrive home, be diligent that you yourself or your men ahead of you, feed the dogs well, then give them fresh clean water in a basin to drink. Next have them put to bed on nice straw in a warm place, in front of the fire if they are wet or muddy, and let them always be held subject to the whip. If you act this way, they will not pester people at the table or sideboard and they will not get into the beds." "Since you must send Master Jehan to the butcher's shop, a list follows of the names of all the butchers' shops in Paris and the meats that they supply: At the Porte-de-Paris there are nineteen butchers who by common estimate sell weekly, if you average the busy season with the slow season: 1,900 sheep, 400 beefcattle, 400 pigs and 200 calves." —from The Good Wife's Guide In the closing years of the fourteenth century, an anonymous French writer compiled a book addressed to a fifteen-year-old bride, narrated in the voice of her husband, a wealthy, aging Parisian. The book was designed to teach this young wife the moral attributes, duties, and conduct befitting a woman of her station in society, in the almost certain event of her widowhood and subsequent remarriage. The work also provides a rich assembly of practical materials for the wife's use and for her household, including treatises on gardening and shopping, tips on choosing servants, directions on the medical care of horses and the training of hawks, plus menus for elaborate feasts, and more than 380 recipes. The Good Wife's Guide is the first complete modern English translation of this important medieval text also known as Le Ménagier de Paris (the Parisian household book), a work long recognized for its unique insights into the domestic life of the bourgeoisie during the later Middle Ages. The Good Wife's Guide, expertly rendered into modern English by Gina L. Greco and Christine M. Rose, is accompanied by an informative critical introduction setting the work in its proper medieval context as a conduct manual. This edition presents the book in its entirety, as it must have existed for its earliest readers. The Guide is now a treasure for the classroom, appealing to anyone studying medieval literature or history or considering the complex lives of medieval women. It illuminates the milieu and composition process of medieval authors and will in turn fascinate cooking or horticulture enthusiasts. The work illustrates how a (perhaps fictional) Parisian householder of the late fourteenth century might well have trained his wife so that her behavior could reflect honorably on him and enhance his reputation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maurine Becotte was born and raised in the farming community of Cut Knife Saskatchewan. She was the eldest daughter of Irwin and Margaret Duvall. Her dream was to become a veterinarian, but young women of her time did not become veterinarians so she followed "Societies Rules" and become a school teacher. After a few short years of teaching school Maurine met and married a true farmer, Emile Becotte, of the Seagram District. Together they raised their family of eight children on a mixed farm in the Baldwinton Area of Saskatchewan. They grew a variety of grain crops, but their passion was the herd of purebred Angus cattle that the built from meager beginnings. As their children we were not quite sure which meant more to them; the beautiful black cows that we all came to love or us as children. Neither one lacked for love or attention. Times were hard on the farm and there was always work to be done. Maurine always found time to create fun and joy in life for family, friends and neighbors. She always had the coffee pot on and time to chat with all who passed thru our yard. On one occasion a native family passed through in a horse drawn wagon and the young mother asked for some fresh water. Maurine being the kind person she was gave them the fresh water and a jar of fresh cows milk for the infant child. Some months later that same young woman thanked Mom again for her generosity. Maurine began writing poetry while attending college in 1940, and she continued to write throughout her life. Her poetry is highlighted with ideas that came from everyday life -- the beauties of nature, the love of family and community, the dedication to farm life in Saskatchewan, history, politics and war. In the 1970's and 1980's Maurine and two daughters compiled six volumes of her poetry under the name of Housewife Harmony Volumes 1 through 6. Maurine wrote poetry for some fifty plus years before ill health took away her capacity to write. She died in March, 1996, without achieving her one great wish to see her poetry published in one complete book. This book is the fulfillment of that dream. Rather than use Housewife Harmony as a title, I have chosen to call the book "From the Heart of a Prairie Farm Wife" because Mom truly wrote from the heart. The following pages will unveil the ability Maurine had in the stroke of the pen.

Book excerpt: Right before Sarah Stagg's teenage sons leave the nest, her husband, Andrew, the star of their local dramatic club, leaves her for his twentysomething leading lady, Hyacinth. Sarah, a freelance artist, quickly discovers that the path of a discarded wife is strewn with hazards and humiliations. Her neighbors and friends treat her like she has the plague. And her soon-to-be-ex wants to sell the house she's spent years turning into her dream home. Her best friend Miriam offers one concrete piece of advice: Sarah should keep busy -- and with Andrew and Hyacinth on a sabbatical from their acting group, what better distraction than the theater? To Sarah's horror, she is promptly given the starring role intended for Hyacinth. She wonders if she should write a survival guide for ex-wives. Her first chapter could be titled "How to Invite Utter Humiliation to Your Life in Front of an Entire Town and Watch Your Heartbreak Magically Melt Away." Then Sarah runs into the biggest crush of her youth. Now Sarah has more -- better -- advice to add to the list: Confront your past. Revel in the present. Be open to romance. But despite her new love interest, Sarah wonders if she's actually dealing or just having fun dreaming up sage words for women scorned. Will she ever truly understand what it means to live wisely and independently?

Book excerpt: In the predominantly mormon city of Draper, Utah, some seemingly perfect families have deadly secrets. Linda Wallheim is a devout Mormon, mother of five boys and wife of a bishop. But Linda’s daily routine of church-going, Relief Society meetings, and visiting church ward members is turned upside down as a disturbing situation takes shape in her seemingly idyllic neighborhood. Young wife and mother Carrie Helm has disappeared. Carrie’s husband, Jared, claims that she has abandoned the family, but Linda doesn’t trust him. As she snoops, trying to learn more about the Helms’ circumstances, Linda becomes convinced Jared murdered his wife and painted himself as a wronged husband. Inspired by a chilling true crime and written by a practicing Mormon, The Bishop’s Wife is both a fascinating peek into the lives of modern Mormons and a grim and cunningly twisted mystery.
